Abstract

The clinical and surgical problems of thirty keratoplasties (27 eyes) in children and infants, between 2 and 18 years old, were retrospectively analyzed. Corneal graft reactions and immunological rejection were more frequent than in adults. The former were usually reversible. Final corneal graft survival was noty very different from that found in adults, with 78,8% of clear grafts. Loosening of the sutura. following a faster wound healing, was an indication for suture removel, 2-6 months after surgery. The visual results, depending on the previous amblyopia, were acceptable in cases of clear grafts (43% over 20/40). Very heigh degrees of astigmatism was not usually observed. The postoperative medical collaboration and consultation of children and parents seems essential to detect as early as possible corneal grafts rejection and to improve the final results.
