Abstract

This paper examines the translation task undertaken between different cultures in the Nuevo Reino de Granada after the arrival of Spaniards in the new continent. Translators coming to the new lands had to assume numerous challenges to deal with completely unknown languages and people. On the other hand, the inhabitants of America had to make an effort to understand and adapt all of a sudden to a totally new system. This translation task is illustrated, from a literary, cultural and geographic perspective, through the chronicles written by Fr. Esteban Asensio, Fr. Pedro Aguado and Fr. Pedro Medrano.
