Abstract
The teaching-learning process may be conditioned by the environment, habits and physiological status of the learners. These external factors are more often studied in psychology than in education. However, their influence may explain part of the academic results. We considered two of these factors: sleeping habits and working memory. Given our academic context, we measured their influence on programming skills. In a group of fourth-year engineering students, we measure their acquired knowledge of assembler and C++, and the size of their working memory. In addition, we obtain their sleeping patterns by survey. Afterwards, we study correlations between all the measures. The results show moderate correlations between working memory and programming, with no apparent influence of sleeping patterns, to our surprise.
