Abstract

Mindfulness word has been translated into Spanish as full awareness. It is a concept that comes from Buddhist philosophy. It was popularized in the West by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, who defines it as “paying attention in a particular way : on purpose, in the present moment and without making value judgments .” Siegel (2010) defines “waking up from a life on autopilot and be sensitive to the novelty in our everyday experiences. From a psychological perspective, the practice of mindfulness is understood as a process of self – regulation of attention, which focuses on perceiving the immediate experience sustained from moment to moment and is characterized by maintaining a state of curiosity, openness and acceptance of that immediate experience (Bishop et al, 2004). The program MBSR (Mindfulness - Based Stress Reduction has been used as a model in various adaptations to meet the psychological needs of students. The results tend to show positive benefits for participants. Mindfulness meditation helps not only address symptoms of pain, stress and anxiety, but their consistent use can produce changes in brain regions associated with learning and memory, emotion regulation and sense of self. Mindfulness is a technique that could be particularly useful Among the many areas where Mindfulness proved effective, is the field of education and in different problems related to the control and regulation of discomfort and emotional well-being. Mindfulness is useful and effective in the prevention and treatment of burnout, in reducing emotional exhaustion among students and the development of adequate levels of engagement in university.
