The aim of this paper is to study the porous system of a fine-grained sandstone (known as Utrillas sandstone) by means of Computed Axial Tomography (CAT). 2D Images from CAT were properly treated and several filters were applied in order to improve the image quality. Moreover, filters were applied for deleting punctual defects appeared during image capture. Afterwards, improved images were segmented and different phases were distinguished (different minerals and pores). Results from the porosity quantification were compared to the data obtained by means of Mercury Intrusion Porosimeter (MIP). Comparison between both techniques (CAT and MIP) allows quantifying connected and nonconnected porosity of rock. Spatial distribution and 3D connectivity of pores were also analyzed from the 3D reconstruction of the sample. This study constitutes the first step of the porous system characterization of the Utrillas sandstone. Next studies will be focused on analyzing and quantifying the injection, drainage and/or imbibition of supercritical CO2 in this rock.
