Abstract

The learning process of Earth Sciences, including the disciplines of sedimentology and sedimentary petrology, requires practical activities in the field, as well as in the laboratory. In this context, examining different types of sand under the stereomicroscope involves, apart from an aesthetic pleasure, a good starting point for introducing students to the interpretation of sedimentary environments. In this article a workshop related to the reconstruction of sedimentary environments and the analysis of detrital sediments (mainly sand) is proposed. It provides a guide to laboratory procedures including analysis of the following parameters: grain size, composition and shape sorting and color. To implement this didactic proposal, prime examples of detrital sediments representative of different depositional environments (fluvial, marine and transitional -beach-) from Alicante province (Spain) are examined
