Abstract

This paper deals with the diachronic analysis of the verb tocar from the point of view of Cognitive Semantics and according to the parameters explained in Geeraerts (1997). It will be shown that the current polysemy exhibited by tocar is the result of a semantic expansion of the verb along time. This expansion is originated in its first prototypical meaning (TO HIT) and is developed due to different reformulations in its image schemas, to multiple metaphorical and metonymic projections, and to the role played by force dynamics (Talmy 1988, 2000). Furthermore, it is argued that the motivation of the diachronic development experienced by tocar is ruled by the speaker body conscience, as is predicted by the cognitive Principle of Indexicality; in this sense, the syntactic constructions in which the verb participate iconically reproduce this body conscience.
