Abstract

This paper presents the workflow implemented to build a high resolution, 3D, geological model of the Nueva Tabarca Island historical quarry. This 3D model could be the main input for potential restoration by replacement of the deeply weathered stones in the baroque monuments of the island. The workflow starts with the construction of a photogrammetric model, that yielded a point cloud. This cloud is the basis for a detail ed geological field analysis including a recognition of stratigraphic units and a structural characterization. The first step in the 3D geological model construction is to build surfaces by krigging inter- polation of lines previously traced in 49 cross sections. These surfaces represent the contacts between the geological units, the origina reconstructed topographic surface of the quarry (before stone extraction) and the surface of potential limit of extraction (present sea level). From these surfaces, geovolumes of extracted and remaining rock volumes are built. The extracted material was 22.6% of U3, 66.5% of U4, and 10.9% of U5. The remaining material is 61.3% of U3, ca.42% of U4 and 0.5% of U5.
