Resumen

This paper is based on a wide definition of irony, which is conceived as a mechanism of pragmatic inversion. This definition leads us to an irony in the second degree; i.e. a discourse process that emerges from the form and ends affecting the content of texts. Although it has been commonly assumed that irony is not especially compatible with poetry, this article deals with a poetic corpus in order to analyse the main features of second-degree irony. The authors selected belong to a new literary generation, which aims to revisit tradition (metageneric irony) and to establish an intertextual dialogue (metaformal irony). In sum, this paper highlights the role of irony in the current aesthetic debate and, more generally, in contemporary communication
