Resumen

The constructions fer/donar + psychological noun have a distribution in ancient and medieval Catalan language which is different from that of the present use. Specifically, today we can observe a preference for the use of the verb fer, which contrast with other languages such as Spanish: fer por vs. dar miedo. However, in the ancient language we can find “no·m fa paor” besides “los que·t donen por”. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the constructions fer + psychological noun and donar/dar + psychological noun in ancient and medieval Catalan (XIII-XVI centuries) with a double aim. First, we will describe what primitive constructions are in the origin of those we study, and what is the process by which they become eligible for the expression of emotions. Secondly, we will prove that the primitive constructions with fer and donar describe different scenes in the ancient language, and that the current preference for fer is due to the proximity of the two scenes in some contexts and to its frequency of use. In this regard, the concepts provided by the Cognitive Constructions Grammar (GCxC) (Goldberg 1996) have proved to be useful.
