Abstract

The paper provides a simple methodology for mineral identification by means of a powder X-ray diffraction technique using online and free access mineralogical databases. The databases used are the mineralogical database webmineral and the crystal structures database of the American Mineralogist Crystal Structure Database, AMS. In this paper, we present 3 activities with key based on real studies, graded in difficulty. We have tried to emphasize the items where the teacher can interact with the students and help develop their critical thinking skills in the context of a geology research problem. Finally, we have developed an Annex which contains recommendations for the teacher in order to develop further activities.
