Abstract
Avian community in relation to two levels of landscape heterogeneity was analysed in an agroforestry system in Northern Morocco. We have used the line transect census for analysing avian community parameters and these transects were grouped into homogeneous or heterogeneous land element composition. The overall avian abundance is 61.4 birds/km, with 52 species, a diversity of 3.7, an eveness of 0.7 and a dominance index of 47.8 %. The gregarious and dominant species account this high abundance. The avian richness and diversity are higher in the riparian corridor. The vertical heterogeneity (number of land layers) is related to richness, diversity and dominance of birds, but the horizontal heterogeneity (number of land elements) is not explicative of these avian parameters. The horizontal homogeneous elements that represent the more mature ecosystems have higher avian richness and diversity. The highest dominance is in cereal landscape unit and the highest richness and diversity are in olive one. The avian parameters are not correlated with horizontal and vertical heterogeneities at landscape unit level.
