Abstract

Popular music reproduces the canon of patriarchy and establishes feminine models and stereotypes, which diminish the agency of women. Nevertheless, in the history of music there are artists capable of subverting gender roles in order to articulate a different identity; it is the case of Monica Naranjo, a Spanish singer inappropriate/ble in the panorama of Latin music. In this paper we examine the evolution of this artist, analysing her music and her persona from a gender perspective, pointing out also the consequences in her career of challenging the patriarchal order.
