Zusammenfassung

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the current scientific production on obstetric fistula from a gender perspective. Methodology: Literature review in Scopus, Dialnet Plus, PubMed, ERIC + PsycINFO, Cinahl, Cochrane, CUIDEN Plus and SciELO. Inclusion/exclusion criteria: full-text articles, published from 2005 to 2022, in English and/ or Spanish. 60 documents were found, of which 49 were selected to be included in the review. Conclusions: The physical, psychological and social consequences of obstetric fistula in the lives of women and girls who suffer from it are devastating: urinary and fecal incontinence makes them victims of discrimination by their communities and families. There is a relationship between this problem and female genital mutilation, since in addition to reducing the elasticity of the vaginal opening, it triggers a sequence of events that include dropping out of school, which leads to a forced marriage and therefore an early pregnancy. Fistula repair is possible through surgical intervention, although efforts must also be made to prevent the appearance of new cases by educating the population on contraception; improving the training of health personnel and expanding the centers’ staff; facilitating universal access to surgery; improving infrastructure and accessibility to centers; carrying out awareness programs for men; and providing information to dispel the myths surrounding this health problem.
