Abstract

This is an interdisciplinary work concerning economic history, urban-demographical studies and health. The article, from a case study but with a vocation of explanation model, tackles publics investments of Alicante's city finances, in a preferential good as health, and his impact on disease and mortality in the middle and the long term. With it we like to make in evidence the evolution from the classic liberal town council to the welfare town council and to contribute to the debate about the weighting of factors that took part in the demographic transition and in the controversy between optimistic and pessimistic historians about the standard of living of the working class, from the second half of the nineteen century until the first third of the twenty century.
