Resumen

The training that future primary school teachers receive does not prepare them to be able to respond to the socio-cultural diversity of today's schools. We are convinced that, in general, we need more specific training for generalist teachers in the context of teaching official, co-official and foreign languages. This teacher training includes preparation in multiculturalism and multilingualism at different educational levels. The European Union, aware of this situation in the European countries, has developed frameworks and documents on these issues with precise guidelines and cost-effective resources to meet the objectives of academic and social inclusion through different competences and skills. This concept makes it possible to realize the fundamental right to quality education, as befits a developed society. The objective is to guarantee inclusive and quality education in order to promote the same learning opportunities for all students. The importance of this educational purpose is based on the fact that education helps to improve life and sustainable development. The training experience carried out in two schools in the Valencian Community reveals, firstly that teachers are unaware of these European lines of action and, secondly, their lack of specialised training to manage the arrival of pupils from different cultures and languages and to teach them appropriately.
