This article is written in response to the new Spanish educational reform and presents specific reflections on the content integrated approach and its impact on learning mathematics. Such reflections are the result of years of research in the project-based learning (PBL) implementation of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) disciplines with KIKS format. The main potentialities of this methodology are the utility of interdisciplinary projects to promote the retention of mathematical knowledge over a longer time, and the development of positive attitudes towards the usefulness of this discipline. As challenges to overcome, we point out the need for a training framework for the specialized secondary teacher, the identification of evaluation guidelines in collaborative work and the creative process, and the popularization of the PBL approach among families.
