Abstract

Despite the fact that throughout history women have been socially barred from professionaldevelopment in the fields of science, technology and the arts, among others, there havebeen outstanding female figures who have left their mark on future generations in theirdifferent disciplines. This is the case of urban planners and architects, such as TeodoraKimball, Jane Drew and Jane Jacobs who, from the end of the 19th century onwards, foughtto materialise their ideas on city planning, social housing and public space for the benefit ofthe whole community. This text reflects on the role of women teachers, in this specific casein the field of architecture and urban planning, in promoting and disseminating knowledgeof the legacy of these pioneering women who dedicated their lives to a profession they werepassionate about, despite social conventions and the reticence or indifference of their malecounterparts.
