Abstract

This article deals, from a biomedical perspective, about the meaning and changesexperienced, over time, of the concepts of gender and sex. To this must be added, inaddition to the aforementioned terms, a series of concepts, closely related to them, namely:equality, equity, diversity, parthenogenesis, hermaphroditism, intersex, transgender andtranssexuality. This is a series of concepts with a high degree of interest, especially if we takeinto account that the behaviors attached to these concepts are neither a fashion nor a setof subversive or shameful behaviors, as some claim. It is, then, about making the generalpopulation aware of the existence of different forms and ways of feeling, living and interpreting correctly and without prejudice, their own corporeality and that of our fellowhuman beings. The article is divided into the following sections: I. Introduction, whichincludes the general objective. II. Some previous terms and concepts. III. Parthenogenesis, hermaphroditism and intersex, IV. Gender and sex: Duality vs. Spectrum? and V. Some reflections.
