Abstract

Background: Use of fluorides as a public health strategy does necessary to review scientific information about its adverse effects in different populations. Purpose: To describe prevalence of dental fluorosis in Colombia and its associated factors by means of the literature about the topic. Methods: Scoping review on epidemiological studies in dental fluorosis that were published in peer review journals, institutional reports and scientific meetings during the period 1996-2011. The main characteristics of the included studies were described. Results: 30 studies using the Dean index and Thylstrup y Fejerskov index (TFI) were identified. Higher prevalence were found in the Department of Antioquia, in 2010 (97 % in scholars 12 aged), and in the rest of the country, in the city of Sogamoso (Department of Boyacá), in 2003 (97 %). Reported prevalence by means of the Dean Index had a range from 0 to 98 % and prevalence by means of TFI had a range from 5.7 to 81 %. 6 studies carried out bivariate and multivariate analysis in order to identify risk factors such as: Using of tooth paste en children under 2 years, fluoride concentrations in levels superior to the required means and multi-ingestion of fluorides, among other characteristics. Conclusions: Although the dental fluorosis topic is researched in the country, studies in other regions, other groups and new methodological approaches are required. It is necessary to identify social determinants through multidisciplinary and integral strategies.
