Resumen
There is a significant increase in the adoption of the artificial intelligence (AI) systems in the financial sector due to the promises of higher efficacy and significant reduction of costs, which in turn offer unprecedented benefits to financial services providers and consumers alike. However, the use of AI and related technologies may also translate into a risk to consumers. In this paper, I begin with the analysis of the risks the use of AI-based tools can potentially bring about for financial consumers, and more specifically I focus on the issue of algorithmic bias and resulting discrimination, the «black box» issue, and the implications of the AI tools for personal data protection. Various initiatives of legal, regulatory and self-regulation character in the financial industry propose to introduce the concept of «responsible AI» as a solution to the risks mentioned. I therefore ask what responsible AI is, and to up to what extent it can contribute to preventing the risks related to the use of AI systems in the context of retail financial services.
