Abstract

This article reports an experience developed with university students related to the need to implement Education for Sustainability and promote changes to adopt sustainable consumption behaviours in the context of the current climate emergency. To this aim, three objectives have been aimed: to raise environmental awareness among students of the Tourism Degree, adopt changes in their consumption to reduce their carbon footprint, analyse the ability to make changes in their behaviour, and value the creation of a community of practice for its achievement. The methodology has revolved around the proposal of a challenge to the students to reduce their carbon footprint in five areas (water and energy, fashion, food, mobility, and tourism). In order to motivate the students to carry out the proposed challenges, an online community of practice was established, accompanied by group dynamics and the response to a form, which allowed the collection of qualitative and quantitative information. The results show that the experience has been positive because changes have been achieved in their consumption habits, proving the efficacy of the used tools for their development. This has led to conclude that it is possible to involve students in adopting more responsible consumption habits actively.
