Resumen

In 2020, approximately 208 Kt of PET tray waste was generated [1]. Over 47% of this waste consists of multilayer PET (mPET) and 7% consists of black or coloured PET. The incompatibility between mPET layers and their lack of homogeneity means that this waste fraction is thrown away for incineration or landfill, which represents an environmental problem and a significant loss of recoverable resources, since it is estimated that in 2020 there were around 1 million trays available for recycling. In view of this situation, AIJU and the UPV developed a mechanical recycling process for mPET [2] and, on the basis of this patent, the RECImPET project [3] analyses the industrial replicability of this novel process in particular applications: toys, footwear and flexible waterproofing panels for buildings
