Abstract

The competitiveness of tourism destinations depends on their degree of development or maturity. In this context, it is key to determine the degree of maturity in the destination’s life cycle. This article proposes a methodology based on a combination of classic statistic techniques (cluster analysis and confidence intervals) to determine the position in the life cycle of destinations. The methodology is tested in a pool of 154 countries. Using confidence intervals for the means of the main variables, thresholds are proposed that could potentially allow for a change of phase in the life cycle
