Every population generates its own soundscape witha variable acoustic map. Each of these maps consistsof different soundscapes which, thanks to its characteristic sounds, tend to define the social and culturalidentity of every locality. The effect of industrialization in medium and largepopulations homogenizes the sound identity, tendingto progressively neutralize the traditional sounds ofeveryday spaces and of their own native culture sound. Therefore, the question is whether sound features arestill present, able to define the cultural identity of ourpeople. However, the issue’s importance lies not only in theprocessing of sound identity of our environment, butthe right of every citizen to enjoy a sound environmental sustainability to allow public areas for greater comfort of its inhabitants. Therefore, the currentsituation leads us to ask questions like: Is our soundcultural identity suffering an irretrievable breakdown? Are there acoustic and sound maps of populations? Are urban design established to respect the needs ofhuman beings? What proportion is given in our citiesbetween legitimate sound and unwanted noise? This paper reflects on the importance of something astangible in the daily life of all citizens as is the identification of soundscapes, its sustainability as a culturaland environmental element, and the need for a strongawareness that would achieve greater respect forsound ecosystem.
