Abstract
The depopulation of the rural areas is the main demographic challenge facing the whole of Europe in general, and the Sparsely Populated Areas of inland Spain in particular. This study analyses the demographic dynamics that have oc- curred since 1900 in the five regions that form part of the interprovincial node of the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. These regions are located in the sparsely populated area of the Serranía Betica, which has one of the lowest population densities in Spain. The study area (9958,1 km2) is made up of a total of 40 municipalities that encompass 136,057 inhabitants, which implies a population density of 13,66 hab/km2. Of the total number of municipalities, 19 have a population density of less than 8 hab/km2 (Very Sparsely Populated Area) and 6 between 8 and 12,5 hab/km2 (Sparsely Populated Area). A large part of the territory has seen a sharp decline in population since 1950. Finally, a series of proposals for action against depopulation are set out, in which access to basic services for the population must be paramount, as well as the improvement of communication routes. Among the initiatives carried out, the commitment in recent years to cultural, sports, natural and religious tourism is described, with the implementation of roads leading to the holy city of Caravaca de la Cruz.
