Zusammenfassung

This article shows the great potential of the digital anatomical 3D printing technology, which works with some materials that reliably simulate diverse human tissues. Among other textures, they can reproduce blood vessels with different degrees of calcification and bones with different levels of osteoporosis. This allows the obtaining of bio-models with or without specific pathologies from DICOM images, precisely extracted through an adequate segmentation and close collaboration with the own surgeons. Several success cases have demonstrated that these technologies are very useful in specialities such as traumatology, maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery, and advanced surgery planning. Also in cases in which advanced medical image is not enough to get a clear diagnosis. Obtaining functional and aesthetic bio-models facilitates the training of either, new and experienced surgeons, in surgeries aimed to pathologies that occur unfrequently, which significantly improves the results of surgery, thanks to the exponential learning curve that surgeons acquire with consecutive practice
