Abstract

The global threats that affect planetary health have been analyzed by the scientific community, highlighting the configuration of planetary boundaries. Some of these have not been considered in the development of protection mechanisms, especially those that affect the marine environment. Priorities in recent decades have focused on climate change, but another limit can have effects similar to this one, the acidification of oceans and seas. Human activities have increased the emission of greenhouse gasses, especially carbon dioxide, which interacts directly with the chemical composition of the planet's blue mantle, causing a change that can have global consequences. The aquatic ecosystems that can suffer the greatest ecological damage are of incalculable value due to their importance for the health of the planet, as they are priority habitats due to the resources that can be found in them. Posidonia oceanic is one of the species that is configured as an ally to guarantee planetary security, as it is a natural carbon dioxide sink, known as the "blue lung" of the Mediterranean; The consequences of an increase in the acidity of the seas and oceans can affect both directly and indirectly this species, which, in turn, contains other species. The existing interrelationships between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems can allow the ecological damage generated by marine and oceanic acidification to become evident on a large scale, as it is a global problem. Measures and instruments will be necessary that, from an ecocentric perspective, allow a protection based on effectiveness and efficiency, for this, mitigation and adaptation instruments will be a priority against this limit to guarantee the survival of the planet.
