Abstract

Parenting/mothering is a growing field of expertise in which professional discourse has been organizing knowledge about childhood and its requirements, in turn overlapping lay knowledge, correcting it, reformulating it or expanding it with new aspects that were not contemplated. Parenting thus becomes a kind of «technology of you», a knowledge that not only implies knowing the development and needs of children, but also being able to modify certain characteristics through the training of skills and attitudes. The aim of this article is to analyze the implications of contemporary parenting guided by professionals in the case of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. The methodology used was fieldwork carried out during the two research periods with associations of families with children diagnosed with ADHD in the province of Alicante (Spain) together with in-depth interviews with mothers belonging to some of the associations. On the one hand, the results show us the demands of parenting as a context for the emergence of hyperactivity. In this context, there is an increase in the responsibilities that the hegemonic discourse delegates to the family sphere, where the behavioural training of families has come to be considered one of the therapeutic resources. On the other hand, it is clear that maternal ideology continues to place the material and symbolic responsibility for upbringing on mothers, which in these cases also entails a therapeutic approach, contributing to the unsustainability of a model that has a significant impact on women’s lives. Therefore, we can conclude that the expert discourse on ADHD has the characteristics to become the epitome of contemporary scientific parenting, that the applied knowledge of psi and neurosciences intensifies the responsibilities of motherhood, and that guided parenting remains gendered, individualized and decontextualized.
