Resumen

Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) is a member of a family of chemicals commonly referred to as xanthines that has been identified as a constituent of over 60 species of plants. Caffeine is associated with health because it is a physiologically active substance, and it has its most potent effect on the brain and skeletal muscles. The use of caffeine is associated with such health risks as gastritis, insomnia, arrhythmias and anxiety. A number of studies of caffeine in coffee, tea and cola beverages have been reported, but there are few studies of caffeine in beverages with alcohol. In the present work we report caffeine levels in 'Aperitivo-cafe de Alcoy', tradicional beverage in Alicante (Spain). In this work have studied five marks of this product. The analytical method used is reversed phase HPLC. The levels of caffeine range from 140 to 190 mg/L.
