Abstract

The present work intends to make Daniel Jiménez de Cisneros y Hervás's pedagogic ideas and concerns known. These aspects have been gathered from the documents kept at "Instituto de Enseñanza Secundaria Jorge Juan" in Alicante, in which he was a teacher during 30 years, from family files and some other sources. His view of how Natural Science should be taught is here analysed in the academic context of the period. He based his teaching on direct contact with nature, and he made frequent field trips with his students (230 in the first ten years). When he was teaching in the classroom he constantly refered to his close environment, in order to arouse the students' interest for the subject. He had also continuous contact with teachers from other Secondary Schools, maintaining a fluent and highly enriching exchange of ideas and experiences. The fact of having in the Department of Natural History appropriate material to be able to carry out practical activities with his students was always a concern for him, contributing decisively to its enrichment. It was one of the best equipped in his time, and together with subsequent contributions, constitutes a heritage which belongs to all the people from Alicante, a heritage which should urgently be recovered and exhibited in a Didactic Museum of Science in our town.
