Abstract

The difference in sports practice in men and women is an evidence can only be explained from a multidimensional perspective. In 2010, the percentage of women who practiced sports was 18% lower than men, the difference in 2015 is 13%. In the field of triathlon, the percentage of women who have a federative license in 2015 is 16.8% over men (Estadística deporte federado, MECD, 2015), although in long-distance triathlons the percentage of participation hardly represents the 10%. The present work describes from a quantitative perspective the profile of women who practice this discipline. To this end, a self-administered online survey was applied to participants in two races of the Cup of Spain in the distance "half ironman" held in Alicante and Valencia in 2016. The final sample is composed of 230 cases. The women who starts the practice of this specialty within the triathlon have an average age of 37 years and have been practicing it for about 4 years. In general, the previous sporting career is 11 years old. 29% have children (compared to 58% of men) and 20% are single (32% of men) with a high educational level, 45% have university studies. In an exploratory analysis we can affirm that the main differences in relation to men are observed in the responses on work in the home and attention to children.
