Abstract

In this interview with Dr. José Luis Giron Alconchel, Professor of Spanish Language at the Faculty of Philology at the Complutense University of Madrid, an interesting perspective is provided on the concept of paremiological object which is that proverbs are repeated speech. This requires from each paremia, on the one hand, a necessary adjustment to the patterns of grammar and prosody of the language and, on the other hand, it also provides some freedom in their recreation and reconstruction. None of these typical characteristics of the proverb can be understood outside of discourse, as each paremia is a short speech (literal text), as well as because it is inserted into longer speeches (romances, plays, poems), whose meaning contributes to unravel (for instance through the characterization of the characters), depending on the nature of the text in which it appears. And perhaps this double literal-reported nature keeps alive the proverb throughout the history of the language
