Abstract

Zarzuela is the greatest Spanish popular music genre. Deeply-rooted into the collective idiosyncrasy it is the ideal vehicle for the diffusion and reproduction of ideologies. In this article we carry out the discourse analysis of six zarzuelas in order to find out the genre identity of the woman they portray. The use of female body parts as objects, the wickedness and guilt of the woman, the praise of chastity and subject fidelity, and love as the man’s desire are some of the characteristics found in these works written by men and exclusively from a masculine point of view.
