Resumen

Los elementos de adorno personal constituyen una de las evidencias más claras de la aparición del simbolismo y su presencia en diferentes contextos temporales y espaciales permite rastrear el desarrollo cognitivo de diversas especies de homininos y de las conductas simbólicas asociadas. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar, desde una perspectiva amplia, el origen del adorno en las sociedades cazadoras-recolectoras, a través de los estudios generados en las últimas décadas. Dichas investigaciones han permitido configurar un mapa cronológico y espacial que va definiendo los antiguos procesos cognitivos antrópicos. También nos proporcionan un modelo provisional acerca de la aparición de las habilidades simbólicas que, al mismo tiempo, trata de escapar de una rígida ecuación que equipare modernidad biológica con modernidad cultural.
