Abstract

This study aims to show how Internet is dealt with on television as well as the image that television projects of information and communication technologies in general. For this purpose, we have analysed the news programmes broadcast on the three Spanish TV stations with the highest audience ratings for the period studied, from November 2007 to February 2008. From the results obtained, it can be seen that most of the news items which mention the concept “Internet” usually refer to some type of criminal event or behaviour or to one that represents a risk for the population. By offering this limited and biased view of information and communication technologies, and as the main form of mass media, television may be generating a negative perception of internet amongst the population based on risk and fear.
