Abstract
Following a brief biographical sketch of Alexander Jardine, including new data, the paper analyses his two visits to Asturias (1771 and 1793), his intelligence role in Spain, his personal and epistolary relationship with Jovellanos (a leading figure of the Spanish enlightenment), their differing views on economics and politics and, last but not least, the personal and diplomatic difficulties of his last years in Spain.
