Resumo

In parallel with the major socio-economic changes which took place in Spain from the end of the 1950s, an important process of cultural change was also underway, whose vanguard was partly led by a new breed of publishing houses which were critical of the regime's policies, and which were driven primarily by political and cultural as opposed to economic aims. Documentary evidence shows that the reforms introduced by Fraga and his team were never intended to bring about a true opening-up of the system, their positive effects being merely collateral in nature. Thus, the cultural change experienced during the 1960s cannot be fully understood without taking into consideration the enormous effort of these publishing houses, the sacrifices made by the publishers themselves and, of course, the content and impact of their publications.
