Abstract

The application of good practices related to the social responsibility is not restricted to corporates as other institutions, such as universities, should implement them throughout all their activities and functions. In particular, the adoption of good practices around university education constitutes the first step to become a socially responsible university –being a further step the integration of social responsibility practices in the university management–. This implies that university degrees, within the different levels of the European Higher Education Area, should be addressed to accomplish the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In such a way, students are acquiring not only technical knowledge in a specific degree but also social, environmental and sustainable values. Moreover, when designing the teaching-learning process, certain values and principles should be considered, i.e., equality, social inclusion or employability. This contribution seeks to identify the good practices in social responsibility that Spanish universities are performing around the education pillar. For that purpose, the author will study the social responsibility reports published by the University of Alicante, the University Rey Juan Carlos and the Distance University of Madrid. This work will finish with some conclusions about whether the Spanish universities are in the good path to become socially responsible institutions, and whether their degrees are in line with the SDGs.
