The focus of this study is to obtain a better understanding of the profesional identity of pre-service teachers that it is forming and its contribution for teachers training program. We investigate the reflections of pre-service primary teachers concerning their experiences in the teaching and learning of mathematics and the necessary knowledge to teach mathematics. Results show aspects that pre-service teachers emphasize as elements of the professional identity of teachers mentioning the own components of the process of teaching and learning mathematics. We propose an approach to characterize the professional identity through the mathematical knowledge for teaching.
