The notion of destruction and conservation of urban heritage has passed through different generations and, until today, is present in the history of various cities around the world. The issue undertaken in this dissertation addresses to the complex relationship between different interests around the historical urban center and the urban revitalization practice, all focused in the problem of understanding the cultural heritage attributed value, considering also their social, economic and environment consequences within the city. lntervention processes often result in cities transformation into scenarios which, most of the time, leads to well-known process of gentrification. First, this dissertation blends several theoretical contributions of some city cases like Barcelona, Beirut, and Brazil's cities Salvador and Sao Paulo. In the second part of this dissertation, the Estaçao Central of Belo Horizonte city (Brazil) is adopted as the main case study, which as has gone through some important urban interventions during the last decade (2000-2010), offering an interesting and very recent example of urban intervention results. At the end of this dissertation an analysis of the selected experiences is made, trying to provide guidelines of future interventions attending the enhancement of cultural heritage, addressed to an urban policy based on a democratic management plan within a comprehensive and sustainable revitalization.
