Resumen

We have study the accuracy and speciphicity of the Potential Acuity Meter (PAM) in the preoperative evaluation of the postoperative visual acuity in cases with cataract associated to a macular degeneration, in a group of 130 cases. AII cases were operated with extracapsular extraction and implantation of on I.O.L. obtaining the final acuity when discharged. Apositive linear correlation was found between normal ocular fundus and PAM prediction (r = 0.77), and the group of patients with macular degeneration (r = 0.77). No statistical significant difference was found between the preoperative PAM estimation and the final visual acuity in both groups. The PAM prediction was less accurate in cases with doubful macular (r = 0.58) wich showed the highet score of false negatives (infravaloration of the final visual acuity) by PAM This results show thah PAM in a reliable method for the prediction of a functional result in this doubful cases.
