Resumen

Within the highly studied semantic field of cognitive verbs, in Latin, the verb sentio stands out. The lexicologists have placed it among the sense verbs (Verg. Aen. 3.360- 361 sidera sentis | et uolucrum linguas «you perceive the stars and the flying birds songs»), the verbs of knowing and thinking (Plaut. Pseud. 421-422 iam pridem sensi et subolebat mihi, sed dissimulabam «I realized long time ago and smelled it out, but I played the fool»), the verbs used to say one’s own opinion (Cic. Brut. 256 quod sentias dicendi liber locus «a place where you can feel free to say what you think») or the ones used to express emotion and feeling (cf. Ov. Pont. 4.11.5-6 utinam sensisses ultra quod querere nihil «I wish you hadn’t felt anything to complain about»). Our paper describes some of the main syntactic- semantic features of sentio and comes to the conclusion that: a. it is referred to an indeliberated and instinctive faculty of human beings, considered as very important for their lives; b. it tends to carry vague and non-defined syntactic objects; c. it allows the individuals to share their internal consciousness and self-awareness through to the use of language: exprimere dicendo sensa possumus.
