Abstract

This article details an innovative teaching project designed to foster the development of communicative and intercultural skills in the English language students of a Modern Language Degree in southern Spain through an Enquiry-based learning project (EBL). The project is based on fieldwork carried out in collaboration with members of the English speaking population of the Region of Murcia – British, Irish and northern European communities who largely reside on the coast of Spain. In this article, we argue the benefits of EBL for the foreign language classroom and detail its theoretical foundations along with an explanation of the phases within the learning cycle. To follow, we describe in detail the project as applied to the community of expats in the Region of Murcia. Finally, we offer some suggestions for the design of similar projects in geographical contexts that do not have physical access to communities of English speakers.
