Abstract

The main goal of the thesis was the study of the electrical and magnetic properties of two and three dimensional topological insulators. The first step was to develop a method to calculate a realistic band structure of these systems. Once the band structure is obtained, it is possible to study different physical properties of topological insulators. Particularly the initial focus of the thesis was the study of the properties of thin slabs of topological insulators in presence of magnetic impurities.
