Abstract
In the southern part of the Kingdom of Valencia, also known as ultra Sexonam, the defence of the Crown’s fiscal and patrimonial rights was entrusted, from 1594, to two lawyers, with respective offices in the cities of Orihuela and Alicante. The territorial division of this traditional and important profession, which was described in 1643 as “steersman of all courts”, was closely related to the dispute for the capital status that both cities maintained. This communication reconstructs the mechanisms for the provision of both professions during the 17th century. Thus, the indigenous origin of the elected officials, their previous experience in the exercise of other functions related to the defence of the royal jurisdiction, and their close ties with the local elites are confirmed.
