Abstract

In this work are described for the first time materials belonging to the Campo de Gibraltar Complex in the western Mencal sector (Median Subbetic, central third of the Betic Cordillera). A part of those materials is included in the Numidoid Formation, while other part is considered to belong to some of the Campo de Gibraltar tertiary flyschs. Their present position is clearly allocthonous, because their original paleogeographical setting is located in the "northafrican fyschs basin", this domain being very far away from the Median Subbetic realm. The emplacement of these materials is interpreted through the working of important dextral transcurrent faults (Intrasubbetic Accident) during the lower Burdigalian. This main deformational event is coeval with one of the majors orogenic phases known as Burdigalian paroxysm, which is closely related with the westward motion of the Alboran Block and its approach to the External Betic Zones.
