Abstract

This study focus in depth in the knowledge of small mediterranean wetland functioning, in a degradation process, that, for historical and socioeconomical reasons, have been confi ned inside urban areas This study aims at deepening the knowledge on small Mediterranean wetlands in degraded state, which, for historical and socioeconomical reasons have been confi ned in an urban space, forgetting the environmental importance of these positive anomalies in water defi cit areas. This type of wetland, such as Calpe (Alicante), usually found in coastal areas of high urban density, which represents signifi cant added value from the territorial planning and management, contributing to maintain environmental connectivity in a wider scale, playing an important role as true biodiversity reservoirs Thus, we conducted a holistic approach, analyzing the current state of the water surface and the surrounding space, which included the physical, biotic and land use parameters. They were combined with fi eld sampling techniques, using GPS and geographic information systems (GIS). Once threats were detected and analyzed, the ecological potential of the wetland, a restoration and conservation plan for the area was developed. The involment of local people was essential to recover the relevance this space deserves. In short, this study provided theoretical tools and necessary techniques to ensure the conservation and sustainable management of urban coastal wetlands and natural resources.
