Resumo

Recent studies hace extensively used logit or probit models to examine hypothesis on merger motives and corporate bankruptcy. In this paper we analyze some methodological issues of using binary choice models in this framework and it is proposed an alternative methodology: The Multinomial Logit Model. Also, we provide an approach to interpreting and testing model coefficients. The method focused on partial derivatives providing a better understanding of the directional effects of model coefficients and the effects of changes in the independent variables on the oribability of belonging to a group. finally, we apply this methodology ti a sample of Spanish Insurance Firms
