During the Messinian, an enormous volume of gypsum and other salts were deposited in the Mediterranean basin known as "the Messinian salinity crisis" and for several authors related with the desiccation of this sea after the closure of the Northbetic and Rifean corridors. In the San Miguel-Torremendo basin are described saline pulses related with the above mentioned "crisis" during the late Messinian. Here, we show the evolution of several (paleo)environmental parameters, using quantitative analyses in the calcareous nannofossils assemblages. Our data suggest a cyclical, probably orbital, oscillation of open ocean and restricted periods.
